Triphala, native to the Indian subcontinent, is a traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation which consists of three fruits: Bibhitaki, Amalaki, and Hantaki. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda and serves a number of health benefits.

Most of the weight loss programs focus on reducing calories and fat by doing more exercise and eating less food. But there is another simple and different way to lose weight with Triphala.

A healthy colon is necessary for the removal of waste products from the body and Triphala acts as a color toner which strengthens the tissues in colon and control weight. Also, Triphala creates an environment in the body under which it is able to process and excrete wastes freely. High cholesterol is also a factor which supports extra fat and water weight. So Triphala comes here to lower the cholesterol considerably, helps to remove water weight and thus act as an energy booster.

Components of Triphala Churna

Triphala churna/powder is recognized as one of the most popular and widely used ayurvedic products. It comes in herbal powder form that can be consumed in different ways. To understand the benefits of Triphala churna let us discuss its three components:

Bibhitaki

Amalaki

How to Take Triphala for Weight Loss

In the Form of Water

Triphala comes in two forms, tablet, and powder. If you are using it in powder form then mix it in beverages. It can be taken with warm water, cold water, honey, and tea.

With Hot Water

If you are taking Triphala with warm water, then add a tea spoon of quality Triphala powder in a cup of hot water, boil, stir it up and let it sit for twenty minutes and more. After that, drink it straight down without sipping it slowly. It should be taken before you go to bed.

With Cold Water

Before you go to the bed, add two tablespoons of Triphala churna in a glass of cold water and let it soak overnight. Drink the mixture first thing in the morning.

Form of Tablet

If you are taking it in tablet form, remember to take 1 capsule of Triphala, 3 times a day. Make sure you are taking it according to your convenience because intake of Triphala in excess may lead to loose stools.

Triphala Churna with Tea

The traditional way of consuming Triphala is in the form of tea.  In this form, you can taste the Triphala fully. To prepare this, take a tablespoon of Triphala powder in a cup of hot water with honey for taste. Add little lemon juice, stir the mixture properly and drink. You can drink Triphala tea both in the morning and before your bed.

Triphala Churna with Cinnamon

Take a glass of water; add 1 tablespoon of Triphala churna and a small stick of cinnamon. Let the mixture soak overnight. In the morning, before drinking it, add 1 tablespoon of honey to the water and drink.

Triphala Churna with Other Beverages

It is also possible to take Triphala powder with other beverages like juice and even milk to improve your taste. But there is a problem of taking Triphala with milk as it can cause digestive problems. So skip with taking milk.

According to ayurveda, Triphala is the best tonic in Ayurvedic medicines and proper use of this can cure many diseases like blood pressure, constipation, cancer etc. This powerful remedy can easily be prepared at home.

The most important thing you should keep in mind before preparing Triphala churna is, it is the combination of three fruits:

  1. Haritaki or Harad
  2. Amalaki or Amla
  3. Bibhitaki or Baheda

Triphala is made by using a proper ratio of these fruits. The actual combination of these ingredients is 1:2:3 (Haritaki:Bibhitaki: Amalaki). For example, if you are taking 10 grams of Haritaki, take 20 grams of Bibhitaki and 40 grams of Amalaki.

To make Triphala churna,

  1. Collect these three fruits and clean them properly.
  2. The ingredients should be without insects.
  3. After that grind them separately and carefully in the mixer, filter and make separate powder of the remaining content.
  4. Mix all the three ingredients by the given ratio (1:2:3). The Triphala Churna is prepared and ready to use.

You can also keep it into a plastic box for future use.

Dosage

  • In winters, take the powder with a one-sixth amount of pepper powder.
  • In spring, take it with the one-sixth amount of honey.
  • In summer, take it with the one-sixth amount of jaggery.
  • In the rainy season, take it with the one-sixth amount of rock salt.
  • In autumn, take it with the one-sixth amount of sugar.
  • In Hemant season, take it with the one-sixth amount of dry ginger powder.

Triphala has a number of health benefits, however, it has been noticed that this Ayurvedic medicine has many side effects also. Let us discuss them one by one:

Unsafe During Pregnancy

The intake of Triphala churna is not allowed during pregnancy and while breastfeeding as it increases the chances of miscarriage.

Avoid if You Have Diarrhea

Avoid the use of Triphala churna if you are suffering from diarrhea as it increases intestinal disturbance if the dose is too high.

Causes Dehydration

Triphala churna can lead to dehydration if the recommended dose exceeds. This actually increases the colon cleansing process which ultimately results in depriving the body of a higher level of water.
