Everybody might be quite familiar with red grams, black grams, and green grams, but most of the people tend to miss a very healthy food and that is horse gram (Macrotyloma Uniflorum). Other name variations for horse gram are Kollu (Tamil), Ulavalu (Telugu), and Kuthi (Hindi). It is also known as the Lentils around the world.
Horse gram is one of the widely cultivated crops of India and it is being consumed here since the ancient times. The crop has originated from south-east Asian subcontinent and tropical Africa.
According to the US National Academy, this legume has become a potential and one of the healthiest food source for the future because of its exceptional nutritional profile and drought-resistance.
This protein rich lentil has got its name because of the fact that it is used to feed the race horses to offer them enough energy and power for the race. The horse gram wasn’t much popular as Roasted grams in north India, but it is definitely ready to expand its reputation just because how it has been very effective in helping people overcome obesity.

Horse Gram Recipes For Slimming
1. Kollu Soup
Ingredients
- 100 grams horse gram
- Curry leaves (4-5)
- Green chili (1)
- Cumin seeds (1/2 ablespoon)
- Dry red chili (1)
- Tamarind juice (1 table spoon)
- Mustard seeds and oil.
How to make?
Follow the steps below to make the horse gram soup for weight loss:
- Wash the horse gram seeds and soak them in clean water for 7 to 8 hours or overnight.
- Use the pressure cooker to cook the seeds completely.
- After cooking the seeds for 30 minutes, rinse off all the water and keep the seeds on the side to let them cool. Later, grind them to make a paste.
- Heat oil in a pan, add other red dry chili, mustard seeds, curry leaves, and cumin seeds.
- Add a little tamarind water in the pan and blend it well with all other ingredients. When the tamarind water starts boiling, add more water, green chili, and salt to it.
- Boil all the ingredients together for 15 minutes.
- Now add the horse gram paste in the pan. Mix it well and add a little more tamarind juice for tangy taste.
- You will know soup has been cooked when it reaches its foaming stage.
You can consume this soup daily in lunch or dinner for burning fat fast.
2. Horse Gram Powder
Ingredients
- Horse gram seeds (1 cup)
- Red chilies (8 – 10)Black pepper seeds (1 table spoon)Cumin seeds (1 table spoon)Urad dal (4 table spoon)
- Tur dal (4 table spoon)
- Salt as per taste
How to make?
Roast the horse gram seeds until they are completely dry and rawness goes off. Now take urad dal and tur dal and dry-roast them until they change their color.
Now its turn to dry roast all the remaining ingredients including black pepper seeds, cumin seeds, and red chillies. Keep all the ingredients aside at room temperature to cool down. Once they are cool, grind them all in a mixer together by adding salt to taste.
Do not make the fine powder, it’s better to keep it a little coarse. You can consume this powder with the hot rice and its regular consumption will definitely help you reduce a good amount weight.
3. Horse Gram Water/Juice
Roast the horse gram seeds to take away their moisture until they are completely dry. Add a little salt and grind the seeds to make a fine powder. Store this powder in air tight container.
To make horse gram water, mix two teaspoons of powder in one class of water. Drink this water twice a day on empty stomach for the best results.
This powder can also be used to make horse gram juice as follows:
- Make horse gram juice by adding butter milk in place of water.
- Use lemon and along with water or butter milk to make the horse gram juice.
4. Boiled horse gram
Soak horse gram overnight in water. Rinse them off and keep them on the stove in water to boil for 30 minutes. Add a pinch of salt and cumin seeds powder for taste. They will be ready for consumption after 30 minutes.
5. Sprouted Horse Gram
Soak horse gram overnight in water. Rinse them off in the morning and dry them with the help of towel or cotton cloth. Tie them up in the cloth and keep them in a warm place. Sprouted kollu will be ready in 1-2 days.
